Nuclear Landscape
UK 2022

Research | Design | System

Nuclear Landscape researches the complex relationships between six active UK nuclear power sites and their surrounding communities, through the creation of the National Nuclear Football League.

How do unseen elements affect the places we live? Risk, radiation and finance become forces that shape the social and built environment of the landscapes that host atomic power generation. The people who shoulder the risk of potential nuclear accidents are those left out of conversations on when and how nuclear power is built, how it is run, and ultimately how profits are distributed. Often forced to consider consequences beyond their own generation, the National Nuclear Football league aims to give these places a collective identity. Using football as a conversation tool for more abstract ideas of risk and radiation, these “Nuclear Landscapes” are researched through interviews, object making, and collective speculation.

Football Memorabilia

A collection of football related objects were created to help catalyze a visual manifestation of The National Nuclear Football League. Each of the four objects was made in collaboration with different producers across the Nuclear Landscape. From foamcutters in Sumerset to fourth generation metal workers in Sizewell, I used the process of designing and producing football memorabilia to start my research into these communities.
